Spirit Stamp by Mare-Of-The-Sea Spirit Stamp by Mare-Of-The-Sea
I've been making a lot of stamps lately haven't I? Oh well, this is a much needed stamp.... that and I'm on an art block. (I'll make a better version when I feel like it)

I've been browsing through the equine community for quite some time now and whenever someone attemps draw cartoony horses they get the "IT LOOKS LEIK SPIRIT LOLOLOLO" comments. To be honest I've never gotten that type of comments but I've seen plenty of equine artists get them so this is just a stamp for them. Don't get me wrong, I REALLY love this movie and wouldn't hesitate showing it to my kids if I have any in the future.

What I think those people need to realize is that there's a lot of other animated horses out there. Heck, I've watched "The Silver Brumby" and can see where Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron got a lot of its ideas- even through just watching the opening. Sure, the two have their differances but you can't deny the inspiration. Besides, Thowra in my opinion is the superior character anyway because he's so magestic yet mysterious at the same time.

Feel free to use.

I think Thowra's better TBH, but Spirit's still awesome!

I can only imagine how annoying it mus get.

Your style doesn't even look spirit at all, so I still don't get why a lot equine artists with a toonish style get those comments.

I remember growing up with the Black Beauty cartoon, we used to watch that on VHS all the time, and this was long before Spirit came out. [link]
Even though it's Hannah-Barbara, I LOVE the style of the horses. Even though they're a little toony, they do a great job with the expressions. And like in Spirit, they don't talk, well not exactly. It's more like how the speech in Homeward Bound is treated.

And I totally get where you're coming from, Pookyns-5 is one of my favorite equine artists.

You used to watch that cartoon as well?! Oh god my mom used to rent for me all the time whenever she could- I still cry like a baby when Ginger dies though. D:

I quite adore Pookyns' style, it's toony but realistic at the same time. It's thanks to her and :iconboribaby: that I refound my love for equines.

We used to own it on VHS and would watch it all the time! I'm tempted to buy a suspicious DVD that looks like it might be the same film for my mother, it was really her VHS, and she was a fan since she saw it on television in the 70's. Oh gods, even today I tear up when Beauty leaves his mother at the beginning of the film!

Yes! She's an awesome artist as well, though she keeps to a more toony style, not that there's anything wrong with that though. ;)

I only have the 1994 Black Beauty adaption, which is still good but I like how the cartoon sums up the book. Unfortunately my favourite horse Captain is left out in both. D:

I love the 1994 version as well, they really pulled out the emotion in that adaptation. :meow: Captain is the horse with the docked tail, right? He's the one that tells Beauty how painful it is to not be able to take the biting flies off his hide? Truthfully I'd have loved it if the scene where Beauty finds that his brother was killed in a fox hunt was in either version. That was always the big shocker in the book for me.

it was Sir Oliver who had the docked tail

Captain was the war horse, I don't really recall his tail being docked off though.

Oh yes that scene. It breaks my heart each time I read it.

I will admit when someone says "cartoon horse" it does come to mind. But honestly, people going "LOLOLO IT LOOKS LEIK SPIRIT" to equine artists who posted a drawing that has nothing to do with him. Though I do use him as an example since he just seems to be... better known. How many people on our side of the world seriously remember "The Silver Brumby" (that cartoon had so many corny lines it was epic... I seriously need to get the book since I heard it was aimed at older readers).

[link] Just read here to see the reason I decided to make this stamp. As much as I liked the movie, I wouldn't go on people'e pages and go "LAWL YOUR BUCKSKINY LOOKS LEIK SPIRIT!" unless they specifically stated they want a comparison (for example "I drew this buckskin horse in this style, but do you guys think it looks too much like Spirit? and I'd give an honest opinion).
