It's pretty frustrating to explain the importance of conformation to common animal owners who know little to nothing about animal anatomy. Just because your pet may "act sweet" or is "pretty", it doesn't mean they're breeding-worthy.
Way too often I run into breeders who think looking pretty and having a good personality are good traits (now personality is a good trait, just not good enough). Personally, I think only working dogs should be bred as they actually prove their worth to the gene pool. For example, with huskies in the NWT only sled dogs are allowed to be bred with either other sled dogs or with rescue party dogs. Why is this? Its to ensure that only good, sound animals that can live past 6 and not develop arthritis are bred to improve the gene pool. Its a sure-fire way to make sure the only dog bred are actually going to be used for work to prove even more worth.
House dogs on the other hand shouldn't be bred AT ALL, especially not by people who don't know a damned thing about dog genetics or conformation. Aside from the population issue, did you know that dogs with poor conformation are twice as likely to develop lameness throughout their lives that'll debilitate them?
However, I also hate dog shows hosted by the kennel club. Sure they're all about conformation but... that's it. And even then their knowledge is enough to make anyone within the vetrinary and agricultural feild just shake their heads in disbelief when it comes to the poor conformation of show dogs. Take German Shepherds for example: [link]
My Husky x GS looks more like a classical german shepherd than those frog-dogs do. No seriously, I want to slap the idiot who thought it'd be such a great fucking idea to intentionally breed dogs that are now literally just dragging their hind end to get anywhere. Those toplines are horridly fugly and their shoulders are too high; dogs are supposed to have the point of hip EQUAL to the point of shoulder.
Is it fair to the dogs? FUCK NO! Do not fool yourselves, those dogs at the shows are far from physically sound. The shows basically encourage horrible, awful conformation.
